Athletics play an important part of the overall program for students at Oakland School. Students have the opportunity to participate in both team and intramural sports as well as numerous sports activities. All programs are designed to introduce and develop specific skills while focusing on the importance of sportsmanship and team work. Oakland School’s athletic department does not hold try-outs for the various teams and activities. All students with the desire to play and the dedication to practice, make the team and participate in each event. Both voluntary and mandatory team practices are held weekly after school.
Offered in both the fall and spring, Oakland soccer is one of our most popular team sports. Co-ed teams are made up of a variety of skills and ages. Oakland’s cross-country team, a mix of all ages and skills, participates in a number of meets throughout the year. Students have the option of attending practices before school (boarding students) and during after school activity sessions. In addition, the Bulldog Cross-Country team often participates in many community races in the Charlottesville and Richmond areas. Each fall, Oakland hosts a Cross-Country Invitational that includes numerous schools from across the area. The annual Cross-Country Invitational is a student and local favorite as the course utilizes the rolling hills and wooded trails of Oakland’s 450 acre campus. Students enjoy running through the woods and across the large fields. Each spring, Oakland hosts a Trail Race and kids Fun Run for students ages 4 to16. The Fun Run, for kids ages 4 to 8 years old, includes running to various obstacles, completing various fun events and obtaining many fun items to carry back across the finish line. Everyone is a winner at the Fun Run as our goal is to encourage healthy habits and promote the many positives of exercise. Two longer courses are designed for students ages 9-16 to include wooded paths, rolling hills and trails that run along our creeks and horse pastures.
Basketball is a very popular sport at Oakland. Teams are formed by interest, skill and ability. Students participate in weekly after school practices and numerous games each week during the season. Like our soccer program, our basketball teams play other small private schools of elementary and middle school ages. Bulldog Basketball often draws a large crowd and Oakland School is excited to host the area’s annual basketball tournament each year. Numerous teams, students, families, staff and guests come out for the day to participate in this fun filled event. Go Bulldogs!
Oakland offers cheerleading to all who are interested. Cheerleaders learn cheers and chants, cheer during athletic events and perform during half-time. They focus on increasing audience participation and school spirit. Cheerleading is great way to get in shape, increase flexibility and strength, and motivate team players.
