Oakland participates in many community service activities and off campus trips on the weekends. Students and staff truly enjoy helping out and making a difference. Recent community events include reading to local preschools, serving at local churches to the less fortunate, visiting the elderly, caring for animals in need, tree planting and a variety of conservation and environmental projects. Special events include:

Oakland School’s partnership with the Rivanna Conservation Society. Each year, Oakland School students, staff and families spends a morning cleaning up the Rivanna River and Trail from Pantops to Riverview Park. This anual event is a favorite among students and staff with contest to find the “most unusual item in the river” and splashin’ in the clean river to cool off! The event concludes with a fun and refreshing pizza party sponsored by the local VFW.

Oakland School’s Community Service Club is one of the largest clubs on campus. Oakland School and the Fluvanna County SPCA have shared a partnership for many years and volunteering at the SPCA is the primary focus of the Community Service Club. Students spend time socializing and walking the animals, cleaning animal housing areas, and overall maintenance at the facility. It is always a great feeling to share in the care and adoption of such loving animals.

Oakland School shares a great relationship with the local public and private schools. One special program that promotes that partnership is Oakland School’s Bulldog Buddies! Oakland Schools students visit local preschools to read with children one-to-one and to classrooms. The preschoolers love all of the “big” kids visiting them and reading fun books out loud! Our Bulldog Buddies do a fantastic job reading and inspiring the love of reading to our preschool pals!

Off campus activies are an important part of Oakland’s community involvement. On the weekends, boarding students go on field trips in and around the Charlottesville and Richmond areas. Students and residential staff attend a variety of University of Virginia sporting events, cultural fairs, plays, apple picking, hiking trails, parks, theaters, and all sorts of fun events!
