Literacy Teacher - Summer Camp

Position Status: Full-Time, Temporary

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for teachers for our summer session. Potential applicants would need to be available from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25 from 8:20 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 20 will be in-service days. Start your teaching journey with a summer at Oakland, with the potential to transition into a longer-term role based on need and fit.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach small group and 1:1, in-person literacy classes, working with students who have learning differences and/or who need reinforcement/catch-up in literacy and keeping literacy going for students during the summer
  • Integrate creativity daily to include themes, projects, outdoor learning activities
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of students, children between the ages of 6 - 16
  • Provide mindful guidance to students

Qualifications:

  • Virginia Teaching License: Special Education (Learning Disabilities), Elementary/Middle Education, Reading
  • Great organizational and communication skills
  • Flexible, collaborative and creative
  • Enjoy working with school-aged children

Pay: $5,200 salary for six-week program

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for teachers for our summer session.   • Assist with grading and other administrative tasks
  • Work with students 1:1 or in small groups
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of students, children between the ages of 6 - 16
  • Ensure the structure of the camp academics and provide mindful guidance to students

Qualifications:

  • Some college preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • Great organizational and written language skills
  • Flexible and a team player

Residential Instructor/Camp Counselor - Summer Camp

Residential Instructor/Camp Counselor - Summer Camp

Position Status: Full-Time, Temporary

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for resident instructors/camp counselors for our summer session. Potential applicants would need to be available from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25. Shifts would be 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday for Day Counselors, or 4 days on/3 days off for overnight counselors.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead recreational classes such as Swimming, Archery, Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Arts and Crafts, and Science and Nature
  • Lead clubs such as Sports, Cooking, Fishing, etc.
  • Assist in large recreational group activities such as camping, bonfires, Water Field Day, etc.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of students, children ages 6 - 16
  • Ensure the structure of the camp activities program and provide mindful guidance to students

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of college, or post-high school work that includes experience supervising children
  • Display qualities in patience, reasoning, communication, and teamwork
  • Enjoy working with school-aged children
  • Lifeguard Certification is a plus or a willingness to become certified

Pay: $3,200-$4,000 salary for six-week program

Housekeeper - Summer Camp

Housekeeper - Summer Camp

Position Status: Full-time, Temporary

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for summer housekeeping staff for our summer session. Potential applicants would need to be available from Monday, June 9 to Friday, July 25, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming
  • Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms
  • Laundering and folding clothes
  • Window cleaning
  • Daily cleaning/housekeeping in the dorms and classrooms
  • Other duties, as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Operations Director

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 lbs
  • Must be able to stand continuously for hours at a time
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch, push, pull, and climb stairs
  • Must be able to kneel, balance, reach above shoulder height, and twist
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain
  • Must be able to work in non-climate-controlled environments for extended periods
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust and cleaning chemicals
  • Must be able to climb, and balance on, ladders

Kitchen Assistant - Summer Camp

Kitchen Assistant - Summer Camp

Position Status: Full-time, Temporary

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for kitchen staff for our summer session. Potential applicants would need to be available from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25. Shifts vary within the hours of 6:30 AM to 7:30 pm daily with two days off per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and service of breakfast, lunch, and dinner to students and staff
  • Stock utensils, trays, napkins, plates and other necessary items
  • Operate cooking and cleaning equipment
  • Perform necessary clean-up and end-of-shift duties

Qualifications and Physical Requirements:

  • Must exhibit general knowledge of kitchen equipment and safety procedures
  • Must be able to stand continuously for long periods of time
  • Should have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Should have the ability to perform accurate, thorough, and neat work
  • Must pass a background check

Maintenance Technician

Maintenance Technician

Position Status: Full- or Part-Time

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for maintenance staff for our summer session. Shifts would be 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all building and grounds maintenance work as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Operations Director, including mowing, weed-eating, landscaping, painting, etc.
  • Help keep the Maintenance Shop area in a clean, neat, and organized manner
  • Perform accurate, thorough, and neat work
  • Punctual and able to observe timely work-break/meal periods, and have an acceptable overall attendance record
  • Know and abide by Oakland School policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Operations Director

Qualifications:

  • Must have some background in lawn equipment operation, painting, and other maintenance skills
  • Must be honest, dependable, responsible, and of a good moral character
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory record to drive school vehicles
  • Must be safety conscious at all times
  • Must have a high school diploma
  • Must pass a criminal background check

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to stand continuously for hours at a time
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch, push, pull, and climb stairs
  • Must be able to kneel, balance, reach above shoulder height, and twist

Barn Assistant

Barn Assistant

Position Status: Full- or Part-Time

Oakland School, a co-educational day school located on 450 acres in Troy, VA, is looking for Barn Assistants for our summer session. Shifts would be 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Care for horses: feed, water, bathe, groom, and exercise horses
  • Tack and untack horses for lessons
  • Willingness to learn new disciplines
  • Blanket and turn out horses
  • Assist in veterinary treatments
  • Maintaining the neatness of the barn, including mucking stalls and cleaning water troughs
  • Assist in various barn-related chores as requested
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Other duties, as assigned by Barn Manager/Riding Instructor and/or Operations Director

Qualifications:

  • Must exhibit general knowledge of safety procedures
  • Must be honest, dependable, responsible and of a good moral character
  • Must be cooperative and work well with other school personnel
  • Must have previous barn/stable experience

Physical Requirements:
